Choose Your Identity
What would it look like if we could pick our own identity? Thinking back to the three most significant transitions in my life. Deciding that college wasn't for me, leaving a safe and steady job, putting myself out there to start a business -- my identity would alter after each transition.
The other day Uakea Egami and I spoke candidly about charting our way to success. As she introduced herself to our Instagram audience, she shared something I was not expecting. A few years back, Uakea made the tough decision to close the doors on her sewing school of +500 students to focus on her mental health and well-being. Curiously I asked, "what was that like?" Her response got me thinking about our chosen identities.
"It was a bit of an identity crisis," she said. At that moment, I could actually feel her words. As an entrepreneur our personal and professional identities can feel intertwined. However in reality, we choose how we identify ourselves to the world. So what is an "identity?"
According to Psychology Today, "Identity encompasses the memories, experiences, relationships, and values that create one's sense of self. This amalgamation creates a steady sense of who one is over time, even as new facets are developed and incorporated into one's identity."
We have the control to choose our identity through our environment. Choose to surround yourself with like-minded people who are goal-focused and step into the "identity" of your choice.
