Healing Through Movement
As an entrepreneur, you’re adopting the role of a visionary. And although it sounds intimidating, being a visionary means connecting two existing dots. For Dr. Jenn Ramos, those two dots are Physical Therapy and Yoga.
“One of the most frequent limiting beliefs I hear from patients regarding physical therapy and yoga is that yoga is for very flexible people, or my body can never do that.” Dr. Jenn said passionately. “I have been practicing yoga for over 10 years and through my own practice, I have been inspired to share the power of movement in healing holistically.”
Jenn attended the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences, where she earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy. And as a registered yoga instructor through Yoga Alliance, her mission is to treat you as a whole body & being to support your healing with movement to live empowered.
In this blog post, you’ll discover how and why Dr. Jenn's mission empowers her patients through movement and flow.
Michelle: What inspired you to integrate physical therapy and yoga?
Dr. Jenn: I have been practicing yoga for over 10 years & through my own practice, I have been inspired to share the power of movement in healing holistically. I approach treatment by blending the science of physical therapy & art of yoga to provide healing, healthy movement, and empowerment. I hope to help clients draw awareness to their mind & body to allow for proper stability in postures and use yoga as daily means to feel good.
I am well-versed in orthopedic injuries which includes muscle & joint issues. I also specialize in treating perinatal (pregnancy & postpartum), chronic pain, trauma-based pain, and performance-training.
Michelle: Share a few common limiting beliefs you’ve heard in the physical therapy space. How do you help your clients move past these barriers?
Dr. Jenn: One of the most frequent limiting beliefs I hear from patients regarding physical therapy and yoga is that yoga is for very flexible people or my body can never do that. In these instances, I remind my patient that every BODY is unique and different. Embrace and honor your body. It is not about how the pose looks like, but owning the power in your own expression.
Michelle: How does breath-work create mind-body awareness?
Dr. Jenn: I could literally go on forever on breathing. It is one of my favorite topics and typically, the first thing I would address with patients. Practicing your breath-work helps in so many ways when it comes to mind-body awareness. One it can help to slow down our nervous system allowing us to be able to control muscle tightness, anxiety, and pain regulation. In yoga philosophy, our breath connects us from our external and internal world. Our body houses our mind and soul & if we can become aware of our breath it can help us to connect to our deepest selves.
Michelle: What’s a functional movement assessment?
Dr. Jenn: Functional movement assessment is a method of evaluating patients in order to determine what is causing their pain or mobility issues. Typically, in physical therapy, we are able to diagnose you i.e. rotator cuff tendonitis or plantar fasciitis. However, these diagnoses do not tell us how this happened. It is beneficial for PT to perform a functional movement assessment for an in-depth look on a patient's movement patterns. From here, I am able to know exactly what is causing someone’s pain
Michelle: Where do you plan on taking your business in the next 5 years?
Dr. Jenn: In the next 5 years, I hope to have a permanent space in Kailua committed to heal, move, and empower individuals from their traumas or ailments. I would hope that there would be a need for other physical therapists/yoga teachers to treat at my facility. I would like to continue to offer one-on-one treatments as well as workshops and classes for the community.
