Here's how to expand your network in three easy steps

The most successful entrepreneurs know the truth about networking -- it's a complete waste of time if you aren't clear with why you're there.

All small talk and awkward conversations aside, to this day, networking is the most effective way of growing your business.

But what do you talk about with complete strangers?

After hosting 100+ networking events, I've watched people set intentional goals and others who set unintentional goals. What I mean is, you must know what you want before you ask for it. And the same goes for networking.

When you don't stop to think, "what do I want to get out of this gathering?" An unproductive goal will pick you. You know those thoughts, "I hope they have good snacks," "I hope there's someone I know, so it's not awkward," or "I hope they have a surprise TedX, so I don't have to speak at all." That's your brain giving you a goal because you don't have one.

Without setting the intention, your goal becomes snacks, a wing (wo)man, or a blessing from the Tedx gods.

So why put yourself through all the effort?

Networking is the gateway of people you'll want to nurture relationships. Networking isn't who can collect the most cards -- it's not a Pokemon convention. Networking is a way for you to get to know new people, share your ideas, and consider how they can help you reach your goals.

It sounds harsh, but in reality. And honestly, you're not for everyone either. But when you master the skill of expanding your network by nurturing relationships that will support your definition of success, then you're unstoppable!

Here's how to expand your network in three easy steps

Step 1: Set clear goals in what type of connection you're looking for and how it'll grow your business.

Before booking a networking event, think about where you are in your life and business. Where are you lacking support for the goals you have ahead of you? This comes with some reflection time, and the best goals are the ones you spend time poking holes in. When you decide what or who you need in your circle, join an event where you can find that person.

Step 2: Map out who in your immediate network might know someone to support this initiative.

Networking isn't just about showing up to random events. You can also expand your network by asking for referrals. But don't assume you know it all and ask for a specific person. When you reach out to your friend, mentor, coach, take a moment to share what's going on in your head. And why you feel it's essential to connect with a specific person. Doing so gives you a broader perspective - perhaps you missed something, and there's a better person you should speak with. That all comes down to your open conversation.

Step 3: Expand your network by attending events.

Everything is obvious when you know your targets - the direction you're taking your life and who'll need to support you. The final step is to find the events (online or in-person) where your people are.

Are the business consultants who will brainstorm your next steps? Are they female entrepreneurs who share the journey of juggling building a business and motherhood? Are they other small business owners you want to collaborate with?

Growing your business means expanding your network while nurturing the genuine relationships that will support you on this journey. The opportunities are endless when you follow these three steps of finding clarity, reaching out to your network, and expanding your network through meetups!
