What does it mean to find your calling?
I once told a friend that everyone should become an entrepreneur -- she quickly shut that idea down. And in hindsight, it makes sense. Not everyone wants to start a business, nor do they find excitement from creating a new idea.
But let me paint the picture. When I came up with this theory, I was in the middle of the storm, designing the concept of Oak + Pine. I felt so empowered! Life looked so different, and anything was possible.
The challenges like financial instability made me sink even deeper into my purpose. I discovered why this concept was so important, and that gave me the strength I never knew I had.
So when I said everyone should become an entrepreneur, I really meant was… everyone should find a calling.
Here are three ways to discover your calling - entrepreneur or not.
Give it meaning
Take a moment to reflect back on why you started. Perhaps the starting point is saying yes to a job, starting your business, or growing a family. Find the simple things in the day-to-day and reconnect with your why.
This could be the values and mission of the company you work for, the feeling you had when you got your first great testimonial, or the maternal moment when your baby squeezed your finger for the first time.
You can find meaning in all of life's moments. Slow down, catch them, and reconnect with your why.
Give it purpose
Giving something purpose means giving it a job. My latest Netflix binge is Downton Abbey.
The idea of finding your purpose through your work clicked in Season 1 when Mr. Mosley, a butler, did everything with pride. Yet Mr. Matthew Crawley, a middle-class lawyer who unexpectedly inherited wealth, didn't see the point. It wasn't until they both saw the butler position as a purpose-driven one when each person found the role they played in the environment they lived in.
Find a job that aligns with your values, and you'll connect with your sense of purpose. If you can't find a job that does that, then create it!
Give it feeling
In my opinion, emotions are the spice of life, even the hard ones -- laugh, cry, and love your way through life. Allow yourself to feel the journey that you're on. It's scary but intensely rewarding.
Finding your calling is simply uncovering the meaning and purpose in everything you do. And the feeling you get is what makes life that much more exciting.
