How to write captivating captions

Fall in love with your story like it's a holiday Hallmark movie. When you read a captivating caption on Instagram, do you think, "man, I wish my story is that interesting?" Not knowing what to write is the reason we have so many inspirational quotes on Social Media. But what if you fell in love with your story? I'm talking, "you're home for the holidays, single and heartbroken from your latest relationship; only to find your high school sweetheart and true love is also single and looking for the right person to settle down and live happily ever after" type of love?

In a world where we condemn ourselves and others for using the wrong, "you're," we put so much pressure on writing the perfect sentence. When really, your audience just wants the juicy stuff, which are the highs and lows of your life. The truth is, if you're too focused on grammar and structure, your audience will be too.

Here are three hacks you can use to spice up your writing skills.

Create a catchy saying

We all have that friend who has a super catchy tagline. "That's juicy," "Boom Kanani," and "that so fetch" are a few that come to mind. But why do these taglines make us smile and laugh every time? In person, we can hear the excitement that's bursting through the words. The unexpected tagline drop lightens up the mood instantly because it's happy, fun, and honest. This leads us to the next point.

Create a word bank

What feelings could you use to compliment your catchy saying? Words like happy, sad, enthusiastic fall short in copy. So get creative and find alternative words to connect with the emotion. So instead of confidence, try effortless; meditative instead of quiet; or thoughtful instead of serious. Creating a word bank and organizing based on emotions adds feeling to your writing.

Reflect on life like it's a movie

Holiday movies are the best! There's something about the setting that makes you want to light a cinnamon candle, wear a cozy sweater with matching socks, and sip on your favorite pumpkin spice latte. And who cares if it's Kona winds and 75 degrees outside. You waited all year for this, so it's happening! As viewers, we want to enjoy the story like we're in it. Allow your audience to do the same by describing your story like a scene from a movie.

We all love stories that can make us laugh, connect and visualize happy endings. So be intentional about what you write and think about what feeling you want the reader to experience. In life, we've all experienced love and loss. So before writing, take a moment to reconnect and fall in love with your story like it's a holiday Hallmark movie.
